What a great week they had last week wining four games in a row (3-0 vs Winnipeg Jets, 3-2 vs Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-2 vs New York Islanders and the 5-0 vs Toronto Maple Leafs). Scott Gomez even scored a goal against the Isles and the Habs are now 1-0 when Gomez Scores this season.

In contrast to last week, the Habs have lost their two games this week (5-3 vs Carolina Hurricanes & 4-3 vs Bruins) despite playing well.

The Pacioretty-Desharnais-Cole line is simply amazing this year combining for 130 points (57 goals and 73 assists) and Pacioretty is on pace for 34 goals.

Carey Price is also having a damn good year despite the low ranking in the Eastern Conference standings.

That’s the thing that bugs me, overall the Habs are playing some good hockey. They just can’t finish the plays for some reason. I don’t remember how many games they have lost when they had the lead but im pretty sure it’s in the 27-30 games range.

Had they capitalised on all those leads they would’ve had another 60 points in the standings and could’ve been in the top three.

We does this group of guys need to finish plays, to win more games, to be motivated? management got rid of Assistant Coach Perry Pearn and Head Coach Jacques Martin and I don’t really see a difference. They also traded away Micheal Cammalleri for Rene Bourque.

I just cant figure out why a group of guys like we have in Montreal with so much potential is sitting out of a playoff position.

I can’t even decide wether or not I want to see the team make a push and probably not make the playoffs, or if I want to see them unload their veterans before the trade deadline, call up a bunch of young guys and give them some NHL experience and hope for the best draft position possible.

All Habs en Español is a project I was invited to participate in a while back from Rick Stephens, editor in chief at AllHabs.net.

The original idea was for me to write Spanish game reviews for Habs games. We’ve been getting hits to the articles and that was simply amazing for me that Planet Habs does in fact have a Spanish audience who read my articles.

More recently we wanted to try and branch out from the articles to try and reach a broader Spanish audience.

We decided to harness the powers of social media and created a Facebook page and Twitter account for All Habs en Español.

With the Twitter and Facebook accounts I will not only have new channels in which I can share my game reviews, but I will also be providing news updates and occasionally a play by play during games.

All of this is with the hope of expanding the reach and influence of the All Habs brand.

I for one am very disappointed with the season they’ve been having. With players like Price, Pacioretty, Subban and Erik Cole in the line up, they should be doing better. Much better.

Many of my friends or Twitter followers are content with trying to see the “bright side” of things; at least they got the one point or, the Habs are only one point away from a playoff spot.

I don’t see a bright side. It pisses me off to see them lose games to the two worst teams in the league. The Habs are stinking it up right now.

Loss after loss we hear the same remarks from the players and from Jacques Martin: “We didn’t play hard enough. We werent focused tonight”. But nobody within the organisation seems to react and make the necessary changes, and that’s why O feel that the Habs have settled for mediocrity this season. How else can you explain the lackluster and sub-par performance night after night?

Is Molson going to do anything other than sit back and smile as fans pay redicoulus prices to watch this boring team at the Bell Center?

If you’ve read a previous post of mine, you know that I feel like firing Jacques Martin is one thing they can do to try to fix the team.

It’s been so bad lately that I find myself not rejoicing after a win. Instead I feel relieved and can’t stop thinking: “Thank God they won”

She suggested that since we would be moving the couch I should put up the Christmas lights.

It made perfect sense seeing that the couch would not be against the window for a few minutes. So I agreed.

So we take out the Christmas lights and low and behold, they don’t work.

I start checking our strands of lights for missing and broken lights. On the first strand I found a total of five broken lights.

Of course, as is the norm with Christmas lights, we had no spare bulbs.

Did I mention it’s the tiny shitty kind of bulb?

Anyway, I don’t remember if it was my idea, my fiancé’s or my sister @kptome’s idea to go buy a strand of lights at the dollar store, and switch the bulbs. We all agreed it was a good idea, so I sent my sister while I finished hooking up the TV.

So my sister gets back from the dollar store with a strand of 40 Christmas lights.

Perfect! I can have extra bulbs for next year.

Nope. I changed the five missing lights and surprise, surprise; it still didn’t work.

At this point I started holding up the old bulbs to a light so I can see which of them, if any, were burnt.

After this long tedious process I cane to realize that I had taken all but five bulbs from the new strand.

I changed a total of 35 light bulbs. I should’ve just put up the new freakin’ strand instead of changing 35 bulbs.

My fiancé insists that the strand wouldn’t have been long enough for our window. And well I just left it at that.

After all girlfriends; fiancés and wives are usually right no?

Why are Christmas lights such a pain in the ass?

Go Habs Go!

• So Gomez played fourth line wing eh? Will he be staying there or will JM bring him back up to the second line? I didn’t mind seeing Gomez on the fourth line against Nashville. I don’t think he belongs on a fourth line, but maybe it will wake him up and he’ll start playing to his full potential.

• There seems to be some good news about Andrei Markov’s injury seeing as he practiced with the team today while Hal Gill on the other hand did not practice. I hope Markov can make a comeback soon, the Habs need all the help they can get. Do I think he’s the solution? No. Why not? I think he will probably get hurt again.

• Michael Cammalleri seems to be injured again. I don’t even know how he got injured this time. Injuries seem to be piling up for him as well. Could it be that he returned too early from an injury that wasn’t fully healed?

• A few days ago when The Buffalo Sabres were in Boston, Milan Lucic nailed Ryan Miller after Miller beat him to a loose puck. What did you guys think of the hit? Personally I thought it was a dirty play. It was classless and uncalled for. We should see plays like that. I wanted to talk about this mostly to say kudos to Ryan Miller for his comments on the hit. If you haven’t seen the hit, you can find it on youtube. But here is the video of Miller’s comments:

I felt that they spent way too much time in their own zone, especially when the Hall-RNH-Eberle line was out.

The team I saw last night was much like the team I saw at the beginning of the season, it didn’t seem like they were meshing well together, which begs the question? Is this the start of another slump for the Habs?

They play their next two games out-of-town in Phoenix and Nashville, both of which can be difficult arenas to win in if you’re the visiting team. The Habs will be back in town on Monday, November 14th to play the Sabres.

Can they win any of those three games?

Not if they play the way they did last night.

What will it take for the Habs to start winning on a regular basis? Certainly not the firing of another assistant coach. You already know what I think the solution is, get rid of Jacques Martin.

One thing I can’t stand about Martin is his desire to play with 7 defencemen. It just doesn’t seem to work. Especially when the d-man you’re using up front is Yannick Weber, a guy that in the pre-season didn’t seem like he would make the team.

I also don’t like having Plekanec at the blue line for a power play, he is more of a defensive liability than an offensive threat.

Speaking of the power play, at the start of the season it wasnt working. JM changed it up and they had a few good power play shifts. But it’s not working anymore. Don’t wait for Markov to come back, fix it now.

What if Markov gets injured again? Are the Habs going to spend the rest of the season with a sub-par power play unit?

Before the start of the season, I wrote three posts explaining why I had a good feeling for Michael Cammalleri, PK Subban and Carey Price and how they were going to help the team succeed this year. I have to admit, I’m not so sure anymore.

There’s only so much they can do to help the team before they start to get overwhelmed. At times it seems like they have already reached that point.

One thing is certain, either Jacques Martin, Pierre Gauthier or Molson himself need to find a solution. If not, it will be a long and disappointing season in Montreal.

Hal Gill: COLD

Gill played in all eleven games through the month of October earning a single assist. Conventional reporters were far too eager to place part of the blame for the Canadiens’ funk on the young defencemen like Raphael Diaz and Alexei Emelin. What the failed to notice was that Hal Gill had a plus-minus rating of -3. Tied with P.K. Subban for the worst among defencemen. Is it just me or does Skillsy seem to be slower than last year? What happenned to the d-man that was so reliable last year?

Scott Gomez: COLD

As some of you may recall, I wrote about Gomez in my last Hot or Cold post. I mentioned that he had improved tremendously. Well, it seems like I was wrong. Gomez really pulled the wool over my eyes in the preseason. He was looking great and producing points. Now he just looks great when he skates. Then he veers to the left and loses the puck. I am officially taking back the HOT rating I gave him last month. He doesnt deserve it anymore. Gomez finished the month with 1 goal and a -1 rating. But here’s the part that gets me going, with Scotty in the lineup, the Habs have a losing record of 1-4-1. Since he has sidelined with an upper body injury, the Habs have a great 3-1-1 record. Food for thought? I think so.

Max Pacioretty: HOT

Since the preseason Pacioretty has not ceased to impress me. The passion with which he plays is impressive. He came back from a nearly deadly injury to be an even better and stronger player then he was before. He has become the power forward the Habs have been missing for too long. After injuring his wrist against the Florida Panthers, many people thought he would be out a week or two. Instead Pacioretty kept playing. He ended the month with 4 goals and 5 assists for a total of 9 points (4-5-9) and +2 rating. He is tied for points leader among the Habs with Tomas Plekanec who also happens to have 4 goals and  assists.

Jacques Martin: COLD

This is a Habs Hot or Cold first. I have never rated anyone but the players in these posts. How many of you could’ve predicted that I would give Martin a COLD rating? How could I not? There is obviously something wrong with the coach. When you have the players that Montreal has, you shouldn’t start the season the way they did. To top it off, the team hasn’t changed much since lst season and they didn’t have a such a bad start last year. I know they won their last three games, let’s just wait and see if they can keep it up. But for now, Jacques Martin has earned a failing grade.

Thanks for reading everyone, I really hope that Habs have a better month in November, so that I give HOT ratings to more players. So, what are your thoughts on these players?

Ever since Pierre Gauthier fired Perry Pearn, the Habs have gone on to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins twice. The Habs are now enjoying a little time off, their next game is not until Friday, November 4th against the Ottawa Senators and some people are wondering if Jacques Martin has found the winning solution, and whether or not he will keep his job.

In my opinion, Pearn’s firing was just a way for Gauthier to buy some time for Jacques Martin and see if JM could turn things around. I still feel that he should hit the road but now I am starting to doubt that he will leave anytime soon. PG seems to want to keep him in Montreal.

Considering just how quiet and secretive Gauthier is, I guess it makes sense that he would want to keep an inanimate object behind the bench.

How is it that Jacques Martin all of a sudden knows how to get his players to play?

Carey Price has been incredible in his last three games. He is looking like the Carey Price of last year, in complete contrast to what we saw at the start of the season which was comparable to the Price we saw in the days of Halak.

Plakanec is playing well, he scored a pair of goals in the home & home series against Boston (three if you count the one credited to Bergeron).

Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty are also playing some god hockey, they are arguably the two best players on the team at the moment.

What happened to get them going? I seriously don’t think it’s Martin’s fear of losing his job. Would you be afraid to lose your job if you knew you had a million dollar bonus if they fire you written in your contract?

I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t give a rat’s ass.

Are the players afraid to lose their jobs after seeing a guy like Pearn lose his?

Was it the little chat that Pierre Gauthier had with Price after practice a week ago?

Whatever it was that woke them up, I hope it sticks around for a while.

What are your thoughts?

• With the Habs having lost their sixth consecutive game at the hands of the Panthers, many fans (myself included) we’re calling for Jacques Martin’s head. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that the announcement an hour prior to the game that assistant coach Perry Pearn had been relieved of his duties came as quite a surprise.

• After giving it some thought though, I realized that it kind of made sense. He was the defensive coordinator for the Canadiens and was involved with the special teams whose efforts are nothing more than futile thus far.

• What a game Pacioretty played! I didn’t think he would play for at least another week when I heard he had partially torn ligaments in his wrist. Max had 2 goals and assist and was voted the games first star. Who knew he had a bionic wrist?

• I know it’s only one game but it seems as if Erik Cole is starting to wake up. Tonight we saw the kind of player we we’re all expecting from the beginning of the season. He was fast, fought hard for the puck and created scoring chances.

• Lars Eller is showing himself to be a valuable asset to the Canadiens organization. He also played a great game. Although he missed a couple of shots that he shouldn’t have. But he’s still young and has a lot to learn.

• Carey Price finally earned his 100th career victory. He was outstanding tonight and I’m glad he was able to reach that milestone at home.

• Tonight’s win his just a start. They still have many kinks to work out before I can change my mind about Martin. Let’s see what happens against the Bruins.

Before going on I want to point out that my opinions which are the fodder of this post are not solely based on the 6 games they’ve played this year under the direction of Jacques Martin. I have formed these opinions over the last three years as whole that Martin has “coached” the team.

One of the things that irks me about JM is the constant changing of line combinations. I understand wanting to mix things up if a line or two aren’t clicking, but it doesn’t make sense to me that he disturbs the lines that are producing goals. Most recently the line combination of Kostitsyn-Desharnais-Pacioretty seemed to be producing the most points and somewhat resembled what might be considered a first line. But they did not go unscathed. Nope, Jacques Martin separated them during the Colorado Avalanche, and to what avail? One measly point and a shootout loss. Players need chemistry to play well together, but they can’t develop chemistry if they don’t play with the same guys.

Second on the list would have to be his claim to being a “puck possession team” Bullshit. The Habs rarely posses the damned puck and when they do, they can’t keep it because his system demands that they dump it in when they reach the blue line. How can you claim to be a puck possession team when you spent most of the game in your own defensive zone?

The third and at times the most upsetting thing that upsets me about Jacques Martin is the blatant lack of emotion. When he’s standing behind the bench I see no thirst for victory, no drive, no passion. He seems like he’s just there to earn a paycheck. Is it just me? I don’t recall him getting pissed about a bad penalty or celebrate after a goal. I always felt that the coaches should show their emotions. Remember Carbo?

Speaking of Carbo, Montreal’s four previous coaches we’re all fired during or after their third year behind the bench. (Allain Vigneault 1997-2000, Michel Therrien 2000-2003, Claude Jullien 2003-2006 & Guy Carbonneau 2006-2009) I think Jacques Martin should keep the pattern going.

I understand that most of you will disagree and say that he is not the only problem. Some will say that there are too many injuries, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are also riddled with injuries and are doing just fine. Others will say that the players aren’t performing. To that my response is that if the coach cannot get the players to perform, that in itself is a big problem.

One last thing, what’s up with his notepad? I always see him taking notes that don’t affect the team at all! Is it his grocery list?

• The Habs played the new Jets in Winnipeg’s regular season home opener. It was supposed to be a tough game for la Sainte Flanelle, but our boys didn’t let the sell out crowd of 15,004 fans slow them down. They restricted the Jets to runway and went on to defeat them5-1. There was some bad news though, two of the Canadiens regular starters were injured in the game.

• Cammalleri was cut in the leg by Yannick Weber’s skate and left in the first period. I hope he can make a quick recovery and get back in action soon. As I stated in a previous post (I Got A Feeling) I have big expectations for Cammalleri this year, and a minor injury wont help at all.

• The second player to get hurt was Jaroslav Spacek. Big whoop. Most of you who know me personally or who follow this blog know that I am not a fan of Spaz-check. I don’t want to come across as an arse and don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish injuries on anyone. But let me be frank, I feel that Spacek will better help the team on the IR list. Just my opinion.

• It would seem as if I got a bit over excited by the acquisition of Blair Betts seeing that he his no longer part of the Montreal Canadiens organization. He was injured when claimed off waivers, so therefore the waiver claim was waived (does that make sense?) Anyway, how did Pierre Gauthier not know he was injured when claiming him? Who didn’t do their research?

That’s all I got for today. Have a good one!

• So it seems Andrei Kostitsyn will start off the season tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs on the first line having taken the spot of Erik Cole. Do I agree with this decision? Not entirely. The only reasoning I can think of that would justify AK46 being place on the first line is to see if he has an explosive start to the season as he saw last year. But even at that…it might not work out. Andrei needs to find a way to be more consistent or he might find himself being moved to another organization this year.

• Erik Cole as I stated above, lost his spot to Andrei Kostisyn and will be starting tonight’s game on the third line with Mathieu Darche and David Desharnais. Although I don’t like that he isn’t on the first line. I can see why coach JM would want Cole on the third line. He most likely wants to have three scoring lines. That would help the team tremendously. I just hope he doesn’t shuffle the lines as often as he did last season.

• I was glad about the acquisition of Blair Betts. He’ll add some good size and grit to the line up. Just imagine a line consisting of Moen, White & Betts. I was however disappointed to find out he wont be playing tonight due to the fact that he is injured.

• So Malone wasn’t #Shanabaned for his hit to the head of Campoli. I can see what Shanahan meant when he said that Malone was committed to the hit before Campoli out his out down while lunging for the puck, but I think that at that point Malone should have avoided the hit. Thank God Campoli wasn’t seriously injured.

• As for Andrei Markov, I hope he can make a comeback and have the usual impact he has on the team. The power play needs The General to come back! When he does come back I hope he can do so without sustaining another injury but IMO that is highly unlikely. Three injuries in a row makes him fragile in my book. I hope I’m wrong though.

Here we are folks just days away from the start of the 2011-12 NHL season. A perfect time for my Habs Hot or Cold series to return. For this first post, I’ll talk about three of Montreal’s regular starters and our new backup goalie and how they performed during the preseason. Keep in mind that these are just my opinions and that I am well aware that preseason games don’t dictate how individuals or the team as a whole will perform once the regular season gets under way.

Jaroslav Spacek: Cold

I’m giving Spacek a cold rating because in the four games he played in, he only recorded one measly assist and a plus/minus rating of -1. But it isn’t only his low point production that irks me.  I found him to be really slow, at times I found him to be even slower than last season. People kept talking about the fact that he apparently lost weight; “Look closer Rob, you can see it in his face.” So what. He hasn’t improved, if anything he seems more timid than he did last year. Maybe he’s afraid to get hurt due to his “smaller” size. What ever the story is with Spacek, my opinion of him is the same as last year. He has to go.

Michael Cammalleri: HOT

So far, I can think of one word to quickly assess Cammalleri’s performance in the pre-season; WOW. It seems as if we were treated early to Playoff Cammalleri this year. He has proven thus far what I spoke about in my I Got A Feeling blog post concerning how he feels that it will be his best season. I hope that he can keep it up. If he continues to play the way he did during the preseason, it will be a career season for him. Cammy played in five games scoring four goals and one assist for a total of five points (4-1-5). He earned a plus/minus average of +2.

Scott Gomez: HOT

Scott Gomez has improved tremendously, although, after last season’s dismal performance he couldn’t get any worse. In four games he scored three goals and one assist for a total of four points (3-1-4). Despite having a -1 rating, Gomer averaged one point per game! If Gomez keeps playing like that he will more than make up for his sub-par quality of play last season. His passes are connecting more often, he is intense and in the game and he is shooting the puck providing more offense than he did last year.

Peter Budaj: Cold

With a salary of 1.1M$ for this season and taking into consideration that they let Auld go, I was expecting Budaj to be better than Alex Auld. That’s not what I saw thus far. He let far too many soft goals in. Goals that actually had to go through him in order to find their way to the back of the net. I felt he had a hard time controlling rebounds and found his side to side movements to be slow and quite laborious. I don’t feel confident having Budaj as a back up. Let’s just hope that he can improve, or that Carey Price will be ready to play more games than he did last season. Peter played in three preseason games earning a Goals Against Average of 4.80 and a Save Percentage of .862.

Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, j’ai cliqué sur votre lien vers le site AllHabs et tu n’ecrit pas en français non plus. Tu écrit en espagnol, honnêtement la, que ce qui te fait penser que les mexicains sont intéressé  au hockey.

Quoi qu’il en soit, c’est juste mon avis. Mais je suis sûr que beaucoup d’autres pensent la même chose que moi.

C’est dégoûtant. Avec un nom comme le tien (clairement pas un nom français), tu aurai du être éduqué en français puisque t’habite au Québec.

Je dois admettre que j’ai été complètement bouleversé d’apprendre que vous étiez déçu par le contenu de mon blog personnel. Un blog dans lequel le contenu et le langage est géré à ma guise; un blog où je croyais pouvoir m’exprimer librement…mais non.

Oui, je suis un grand partisan du Tricolore, mais je ne vois pas pourquoi cela signifie que je devrais écrire en français. N’y a t’il pas assez de média francophone pour vous plaire a ce sujet?

Hélas, il est vrai que je ne contribue au réseau AllHabs qu’en espagnol. Vous seriez surpris du nombre de gens a Montréal qui parlent l’espagnol et qui sont intéressés au hockey. On ne sait jamais, peut-être que monsieur Scott Gomez s’intéresserait a digérer un rapport de match dans une langue autre que le français ou l’anglais.

D’ailleurs, Il me semble injuste de qualifier tous ceux qui parlent l’espagnol comme étant Mexicains. Une telle expression me démontre une bonté d’ignorance de votre part.

Malgré tout, je reconnais votre déception, mais je vous serais gré d’accepter ma décision de m’exprimer dans la langue qui me plaît.

I previously wrote that he was hardly showing up to class, usually missing safety and precautionary lessons for the risky modules and then endangering all of us with his stupidity.

I then told you about the time were he missed all but one period of a module and was actually surprised that the teacher wouldn’t let him write the exam.

With today’s post, I’m not sure if  I should be rejoicing, or feel bad for the kid.

We found out that he has been expelled from the school due to his poor attendance record.

I guess I kind of feel bad because he was always telling us about his past and how he was going to school to try to get his life back on track. Then again, that’s also the same reason I was so irked by his lack of effort and willingness to attend class on a regular basis.

One thing’s for sure, we now have one less shmuck  putting our lives and physical well-being at risk now.

He used to often tell us about his shenanigans he would do when not in school. I guess he was just too cool for school.
