Habs Hot or Cold: January 2011

James Wisniewski: HOT

In my opinion The Wiz is currently the best defenseman on the Habs roster. He turned out to be a great acquisition especially with the injuries to Markov and Gorges. When he is in possession of the puck behind his own net he doesn’t just slap it away like Hall Gill would do. He is patient with the puck and handles it well without panicking. You see him not only keep the puck away from the opposing teams players but he also takes the time to look up, spot his teammates and make a good breakout pass. Wisniewski played 10 games in a January averaging 23:27 of ice time. In those 10 games he got 9 assists and ended the month with a +/- rating of -1.

Andrei Kostitsyn: COLD

For the month of January Andrei Kostitsyn played in 10 games as well. Over the course of those games he scored 3 goals and assisted 2 others for a total of 5 points (3-2-5) while plying an average 15:12 of ice time.  I personally feel that Andrei has the potential to be a great player. If he were to give it his all every game he could probably get around 30+ goals in a season, but so far the way he performs he’s probably on pace to get a maximum of about 21 goals. But like I said, he has to give it his 100% every game and to be honest I don’t see it and that’s why I’m giving him a COLD rating for the past month. His stats have been decreasing at a steady pace since October (6 goals 4 assists in October compared to 3 goals 2 assists in January). Here’s some food for thought; the Habs have won 12 out of 13 games when he scored at least one goal so far this season. Kostitsyn finished the month with a +/- rating of +4.

Scott Gomez: COLD

So here’s the rundown for Gomer. In January he also played in 10 games. He posted 1 goal and 5 assists (6 points) and finished with a -1 while clocking in 19:27 of ice time. Oh, and let’s not forget his 8 ridiculous penalty minutes. I stated in a previous post that I thought that the addition of Max Pacioretty to the Gionta/Gomez woke Gomez up. Well I stand corrected. Scotty proved me wrong. I got to admit his performance did peek a little in December but now it’s pretty much flat line again. Do I need to remind you all that Montreal’s paying him 8 Million dollars for his 6 points? (26 for the season thus far)

Lars Eller: COLD

I honestly don’t want to be too hard on Eller because he’s still young and has a lot to learn. It’s probably just the expectations we all had for him because of the Halak trade that make him seem like an underachiever. I also think that Jacques Martin is not the right person to be coaching young guys like Eller. Anyway, Lars was scratched for a couple of games in January playing an average of just over 11 minutes in only 7 games. He has 1 goal and 1 assist. Eller has gotten chances on many different line combinations thus far, but I don’t feel that he is taking full advantage of his opportunities. You can count on your fingers how many games he goes full throttle and plays to the best of his abilities. At this point I’m beginning to wonder if he should’ve played in Hamilton so that we can see what someone else could’ve done. Someone like Palushaj maybe?

  4. As a true Habs fan I can tell you for a fact that this “blog post” is total bullshit. Your should get your freakin facts straight before puting shit on the web for others to read. All of these players are having career seasons. You call yourself a habs fan? what an insult to the rest of us.

    • Mark,

Gomez has a career best of 70 points in 1999-2000 & 2003-2004 with the Devils and then in ’07-’08 with the Rangers. He currently has 28 points.

Kostitsyn’s career high in points came in the 07-08 season when he had 53 points. As we speak he has
      29 points.

How can you possibly say these are career seasons for them?
