Montreal Canadiens vs. Florida Panthers: Game Review.

So a lot of you who follow me on Twitter, or who are part of the Habs BBM Group (Blackberry Messenger, in case you don’t know what BBM is) that I am in, were well aware that I went to the Habs game last night.

I wanted to write a review of some sort about yesterday’s game. My “review” probably won’t be like any reviews you find in the papers or on any sports news site, but mostly a collection of my thoughts and reactions regarding certain aspects of the last night’s game.

Young Guns: I don’t know about everyone else out there but the thing I look forward to the most in the pre-season is watching the young guys trying to prove their worth to the organization. Last night 9 rookies were dressed for the game, and out of this five of them made it onto the score sheet. Although Ryan White (1 goal, +2) and Tom Pyatt (1 goal, +2) both played a good game the rookie that I was most impressed with was Lars Eller (3 assists, +3). You would imagine that being placed on the same line as Mike Cammalleri and Thomas Plekanec, he would be under some stress, but this was not the case. He grabbed his opportunity and ran with it. He played well even though he doesn’t usually play right wing and set up three goals. He made a good impression on his line mates and coaching staff.

Veterans: I was always of the opinion that the pre-season is not only a good time for the rookies to prove themselves, but it also serves as a warm up for the “veterans”. They get a chance to get into the flow and get some rhythm going before the season starts. They also get to show the organization that management shouldn’t worry; they can still do their job.  Taking that into consideration, I got to say that in my honest opinion, Mike Cammalleri  (1 goal, 2 assists, +3) and Thomas Plekanec (2 goals, +4) are ready to pick up where they left off last year during the thrilling playoff run that the Habs had. They played an amazing game, and showed great chemistry again being paired up on the same line like last year.

Penalties:  Although the Habs won 6-2, I felt they played a sloppy game in terms of penalties. They were penalized for 50 minutes and Ryan White got a game misconduct. I know that these penalties didn’t amount to much on the score sheet, but when you consider that Florida’s only two goals were indeed scored on a power play, that does worry me a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I love Subban and I think he will develop into a great player, but he took three bad penalties yesterday (Kneeing, Cross-Checking and Diving) and that disappointed me a bit.

Price: I wonder how many of you were waiting for me to get to talking about Price. First of all, I want you all to know that I am no band wagon fan, I support the whole team. For me it doesn’t matter what name is on the jersey, all the matters to me is that they are playing for the bleu-blanc-rouge. With that being said, I felt that Price played a solid game. He seemed confident and in control, and this was very refreshing to see from him.

The Fans: Yes, I’m going to talk about the fans. I was afraid yesterday that I was going to the game and that I would be embarrassed by those band wagon haters that booed Price the last time he played in Montreal. Honestly, I was surprised. I was not expecting them to cheer for him before the initial puck drop. They even cheered and shouted their support for him after those two goals. It was an all-around great atmosphere and I was glad that the fans came together to support Price and the team as a whole.
